Communities, workers and human rights

Communities, workers and human rights is a priority area in Statkraft’s sustainability strategy. Statkraft’s activities take place in local contexts and involve employees, contractors and supply chains. The strategy aims to manage impacts, respect human rights and contribute to positive outcomes where projects are developed.

Why it matters

Renewable energy is essential for building energy systems that are affordable, reliable and secure. It is a core part of energy security and critical infrastructure for stability and resilience to climate change.

Developing hydropower, wind, solar and battery storage reduces dependence on imported fuels and limits exposure to price volatility, climate risks and geopolitical shocks. Renewable energy projects can also support public finances and local development through tax revenue, local procurement, employment and targeted community investments.

At the same time, projects are developed in local contexts and interact with communities, including residents, landowners and businesses, and in some cases Indigenous and tribal groups. These interactions take place both in operations and across supply chains. While these projects can create positive outcomes, they can also lead to challenges that need to be managed, including labour rights, fair and inclusive working conditions and the rights of people affected by projects and supply chains.

For Statkraft, this means working to respect human rights across operations and supply chains, by preventing, reducing and managing negative impacts, while also contributing to positive outcomes where the company operates.

Our targets

Decent working conditions

  • By 2028, Statkraft ensures a living wage for all employees and works with prioritised suppliers to extend this commitment to site‑based workers.

Communities and local resilience

  • By 2028, all projects implement documented community engagement processes and accessible feedback channels, based on an understanding of affected communities.
  • By 2028, Statkraft will measure positive social and economic impact in select projects.

Indigenous peoples’ rights

  • Statkraft commits to respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples by seeking their trust and consent as well as avoiding, mitigating or remedying human rights impacts.

Human rights due diligence

  • Statkraft continues to embed risk-based human rights due diligence across all relevant business activities and processes.
